Millicent “Millie” Arrick Gordon, 92 died peacefully on August 15, 2018 at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Valdese NC.

She was born in Glen Dale, West Virginia on May 5, 1926 to the late Roy Wells and Amelia Zesinger Arrick.

She is survived by her daughters Suzanne Gordon Best, of Raleigh, NC; Nancy Gordon, of Mooresville, NC; sons Charles Gordon of Auburn WVa and Arrick Gordon of Marion, NC; two grandchildren, Mark Best and Ashley Best Evans, husband Courtney and twin sons Cole and Connor all of Raleigh, NC.

Music was her life since the age of 3. A graduate of Marshall University, she continued her music education at Cleveland Institute of Music and spent a year at Juilliard in New York City.

Millie was a member of Morganton Service League organizing committee. She was on several occasions the Director of the Morganton Christmas combined choir. She also was a supporter of the Morganton Concert Association. Millie was the music director for the First Presbyterian Church and later the choir director for the Glen Alpine United Methodist Church.

Millie, known as the “Music Lady” at Western Youth Institute for 30 years developed Project Together. For that she recruited senior citizens who were gifted in the arts and willing to share their talents with the inmates. Some of those talents were guitar, composing poetry, painting or writing calligraphy. She truly felt this was her “calling” in life.

A memorial service to celebrate Millie’s life will be held 2pm, Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at Glen Alpine United Methodist Church, Glen Alpine, NC. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service.

At the family’s request, please do not send floral arrangements. If you wish to make a donation in Millie’s memory, please make a memorial donation to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC  28690.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:7)
