Mildred Victoria Stines, 94, a resident of the Grace Ridge Retirement Community passed away Monday, September 26, 2011 at Grace Hospital in Morganton. She was a native of Madison County and a daughter of the late Fuller H. Stines and Bessie Fox Stines.Mildred was a graduate of Mars Hill College in Secretarial Science and began her career working for Mr. Coleman Ramsey, a lawyer in Marshall, NC. She also served as Court Recorder for Madison County. The late Senator Sam Ervin presided over several sessions of court during her tenure as Court Recorder. She moved to Burke County in 1947 and worked for Drexel Furniture, Henredon Furniture, and briefly for the N.C School for the Deaf. Mildred retired in 1982.She was a 64 year member of Mimosa Chapter 269, Order of the Eastern Star, where she had served as a worthy matron. In February of this year Mimosa Chapter honored her for her 56 years of service as secretary and presented her with The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, and Mildred Stines Day in Morganton was proclaimed by the mayor. She was a charter member of the Glen Alpine Women’s Club and was an active member of Glen Alpine Presbyterian Church for over 60 years. Mildred had knit nearly 200 sweaters for children around the world for Guidepost’s Knit for Life program.Mildred was the oldest of 6 children. She is survived by four sisters, Eloise McIntosh and husband, Wintz, of Burnsville, NC, Elizabeth Roberts of Marshall, Winna Stines of Mars Hill, and Jean Stines of Arden; a brother, Fred H. Stines of Morganton; nieces, Patricia Franklin of Marshall, Susan Ball and husband, Niles, of Burnsville, and Karen Rockett and husband, David, and their son, Alex, of Morganton; nephews, McRae Roberts of Marshall, Harrell Stines and wife, Connie, of Morganton (who were her faithful caregivers for the last two years); and several great-nephews and nieces.In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by two very special nieces, Ann Stines and Billie Lynn Roberts.The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 29, 2011 at the Glen Alpine Presbyterian Church with Rev. Howard Doerle officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Alpine Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the service. At other times the family will be at the residence of a nephew, Harrell Stines, 6240 Watershed Rd., Morganton.
