Mildred “Tumpy” Powell, 79, of the Oak Hill Community, Morganton, NC passed away Thursday, March 9, 2017. Born in Burke County, NC on July 1, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Lewis A. Powell and Lessie Whisnant Powell. Mildred was a member of Faith Tabernacle Church in Marion, NC.
A loving mother, grandmother, and friend, Mildred is survived by her son, Johnny Powell and wife, Roma, of Morganton; daughters, Kathy Powell Burnette and husband, Mike, and Debbie Powell Hensley and husband, James, all of Morganton; grandchildren, Jennifer Hughes, Jessica Cameron, Jeremy Burnette, Kandace Page, Ryan Hensley, and Tyler Hensley; great-grandchildren, Nikolai Hughes, Kaylee Kanipe, Journey Burnette, Ryker Burnette, Addison Page, and Hannah Page; a brother, Charles E. Powell and wife, Jane, of Morganton; sisters, Nell Cuthbertson and Ruby Carswell, both of Morganton; and her special companion, Panda.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by her husband, Paul J. Powell; brothers, Albert, Robert, and Ralph Powell; and sisters, Ethel McGee and Sarah Freeman.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2pm, Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center. The memorial service will be held at 2pm in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with the Reverends Harold and Barbara Camp officiating.
