Mildred Maloney Coffey, 74, of Morganton, NC, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 23, 2026, while surrounded by her family.
Born in Burke County, NC on May 27, 1952, she was the daughter of the late William Ernest Maloney and Velma Letha Orders Maloney.
Mildred was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who dearly loved her family and her dogs. She was talented at crafts, especially drawing, painting, and sewing. She also enjoyed baking and riding motorcycles.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Michele Cooke (Alan), Ronald Wayne Burnette II, and William Douglas “Dee” Beck (Lisa); grandchildren, Dakota Wayne Wilson (Lisa), Austin Otis Wilson (Natalie), Kelsey Burnette, Mason Cole Beck (Sara), Jaylin Samantha Beck, and Ronald Wayne Burnette; six great-grandchildren and one on the way; sisters, Marilyn Janice Maloney Harrison and Wanda Maloney Fox; nephew, Dwayne Harrison; and niece, Melissa Lalondie (Scott).
In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by her first husband, Ronald Wayne Burnette, Sr.; second husband, John Calvin Coffey; and a grandson, Chase Whisnant.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, August 28, 2026 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, August 28, 2026 in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with a grandson, Dakota Wilson, officiating. Entombment will follow at Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Millie, you were my saving grace when I was growing up! The time spent at your house gave me more good memories than I can count! You was the mother I needed as my mother's sat in the same room. I always felt like a safe "kid" when you were around. You gave me love attention peace and wisdom. Thank you. Thank you for making my daughters pink shiny prom dress and sharing your love with my children. I love you Millie! I now regret not telling you that enough! But I know you are watching out for all of us! Thank you Millie I love you!
I’m so sorry to hear about the passing of Ms. Millie. She was my school bus driver years ago at Oak Hill, and she and her husband, John, were such good friends with my grandfather. I have so many fond memories of John, Ms. Millie, and my grandfather planning their VA trips together—and somehow, those trips always seemed to end up in Cherokee afterward! I also remember when Ms. Millie got her Harley. She was so proud of that bike! She was a wonderful person who clearly made an impact on so many lives. Keeping all of you in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We always joked about her living on Lost Corners with the big houses… she would say “We live on the poor side” God Bless you family. Hold on to the wonderful memories.
