Mildred Garrison Cash passed away peacefully at her home in Morganton, NC on November 25, 2010. Born May 21, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Sadie Pitts Garrison and Thomas Edward Garrison. As a native of Glen Alpine, NC, she cherished her heritage and the many friendships that grew and flourished there throughout her lifetime. Affectionately known to her family and friends as "Mums", she was a loving, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was an eternal optimist who faced life’s challenges with resilience and grace. Mildred’s life was focused on her love of family and people. Her life was rich in friendships, but more importantly, enriched by them.She was an avid proponent of education and had great interest in being involved in her community. Mildred was a 1945 graduate of Salem College, Winston-Salem, NC. Shortly after college, she was a teacher for several years within the Glen Alpine School System. She later served as a two-term member of the City of Morganton School Board and additionally as a member of the Board of Trustees of Salem College for two terms. She was a charter member of The Morganton Service League.A true lady of strong faith and goodwill, Mildred was a member of First United Methodist Church of Morganton, and when able, continued to enjoy attending services and special functions at Glen Alpine United Methodist Church.Mildred is survived by the love of her life for more than 65 years, husband, Paul Spencer Cash; daughters, Elizabeth Pitts Cash of Vero Beach, FL and Susan Cash Andrea and husband, George of Glen Alpine; son, Spencer Cash and wife, Donna of Morganton; and one grandson, James "Duke" Farquharson (M/Sgt(Ret.)USAF) and wife, Jackie of Tampa, FL.A Celebration of Life Service will be held at First United Methodist Church of Morganton on Monday, November 29, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Sydnor C. Thompson officiating. The family visitation will be held at the church from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Graveside services will be private.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that desired memorials be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690, First United Methodist Church, 200 N. King St., Morganton, NC 28655, or to Western Piedmont Foundation, Inc., 1001 Burkemont Ave., Morganton, NC 28655. Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
