Mildred Fox Berry, born on August 6, 1927, in Greenville, South Carolina. She entered her eternal rest peacefully at home in Conover, North Carolina, with her daughter Jacqueline by her side.
She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Everlena Bruce and Milton Johnson; her husband, Harvey Fox; and her sons, Harvey Fox Jr. and Wallace Fox Sr.
A woman of unwavering faith, Ms. Mildred accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of New Bethel Baptist Church at just 9 years old. She remained a faithful and dedicated servant of the Lord throughout her life. During her many decades of service at New Bethel, she devoted her time and talents as a choir member, Sunday School teacher, Children's Church leader, Deaconess, Church Historian, and director of the Christmas and Easter plays. She also served her community as a HeadStart teacher for the county, touching countless young lives with her patience, compassion, and guidance.
Throughout her life, Ms. Mildred enjoyed opportunities to travel and experience the world. She journeyed to Nigeria with her daughter, Selina and family, making memories that remained dear to her heart. She also delighted in numerous church trips to the beach, where the fellowship brought her joy and laughter, and she cherished the experience of taking a cruise—an adventure she spoke of with pride and gratitude.
Ms. Mildred leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Jacqueline Fox Lackey (Robert) and Selina Fox Iheanachor (Ignatius). She is also survived by her grandchildren: Robert Fox, Wallace Fox Jr., Shalawn Gibson, Laura Iheanachor Hutty (Imani), and Hope Iheanachor Griffm;(John) her great-grandchildren Jaquan, Chad, Titus, Jade, Amara, Amadi, Jocelyn, Tyra, Jack, Teddy, Wallace III, Fabrianna, Kareb, Jan-yah and 12 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom will continue to carry forward her legacy of love, strength, and faith. She also treasured the companionship of her dear and faithful friend, Debbie Chadwick, whose presence brought comfort and joy to her later years.
Ms. Mildred will forever be remembered for her warm heart, her steadfast spirit, and the deep love she shared so generously with her family, church, and community. Her quick wit—and her unmistakable ability to set you straight when you needed it—were trademarks of her character, shaping those around her with honesty, strength, and enduring love.
A celebration of her life will be held at New Bethel Baptist Church in Morganton, NC, on Saturday, December 13. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 12:00 p.m., with Pastor Benjamin Cuthbertson presiding. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park.

🕊️ A Tribute to a Guiding Light We gather today with heavy hearts, but also with spirits warmed by the memory of a truly exceptional woman, my grandmother. It is difficult to fully capture the magnitude of her love, but for me, her presence was nothing short of life-changing. As a young boy, when the world felt heavy and the shadows of despair loomed, it was my grandma’s arrival—or the journey to her home—that served as my spiritual and emotional recharge station. Her love wasn’t just a comfort; it was a powerful, sustaining force. I remember feeling unloved at times, yet the moment I was in her light, her unwavering affection would pour into my spirit, giving me the strength and courage to push forward and face another day. That deep, supportive love is a gift I will carry always. Beyond the emotional sustenance, she taught me that life’s greatest joys often come straight from the earth. I cherish the memory of being in her garden, surrounded by the bounty of delightful, fresh vegetables. She didn't just feed my body; she introduced me to the pure taste of nature’s goodness and the simple pride of a harvest. And of course, there were the lessons in etiquette. These weren't harsh rules, but gentle instructions on how to navigate the world with grace, respect, and dignity. I carry those lessons with me to this day—in how I treat others, how I present myself, and how I honor the moments we share. They are a living testament to her wisdom. Grandma, you were the anchor that held me steady, the sun that chased away the dark, and the gentle teacher who prepared me for life. Thank you for the unconditional love, the strength you instilled in me, and the beautiful, lasting lessons you left behind. We miss you deeply, but your love lives on in every kind act we perform, every vegetable we savor, and every moment we choose to push forward.
