If you ever met Millie, then you can still hear her voice and probably have a great story to tell. She greeted everybody with a smile. She loved with her whole heart and made you feel special. She was stronger, braver and more compassionate than anybody we ever met. When you entered her home, you knew you were going to be treated like family. She cherished her family and her friends without judgment.
She was dedicated. She worked hard and retired right before her 80th birthday. She was our role model, best friend, and the best mom, sister, grandma and aunt in the whole world.
We now have an angel watching over us and rejoicing in the presence of our Lord.
She will be missed by so many people that she touched. We will carry the wonderful memories of her as we navigate the difficult days ahead. We know that she would want us to not be sad but carry on her legacy until we meet her again.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Kathleen Hirt and Caroline Sheriff; son, Michael Sheriff; grandchildren, Christopher Rueckel, Hannah Rueckel, Heather Sheriff, Jacqueline Sheriff, Alex Sheriff, and Joshua Sheriff; siblings, Nancy Reis, Neil Touchet, Darlene Palmer, and Vicki White; and her nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday, July 18, 2025 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 19, 2025 in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Brad Browning officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

What can I say about my older sister? Millie and I and our sister Nancy were all together in Germany in (dare I say it) 1948. I have so many fond recollections from childhood to the present. When she lived in California, then New Jersey, and finally North Carolina I have many loving memories of the visits we had together, with both Millie and her family. Millie always made time to visit with us in Florida, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. She was a child at heart who saw the beauty in everything. Once, when she was visiting Madelyn and me in Pennsylvania, around the holidays, she got so excited when Santa Clause came riding down the street on a firetruck. On one of our trips to New York City we went to the top of the World Trade Center. Whenever I hear a reference to 9/11, I think about Millie. Nothing ever seemed to upset her even disposition. When she lived in New Jersey she would think nothing of preparing a meal for 8 to 12 people on a moment’s notice. In 1986 Millie and I watched the fireworks over the water from the tip of Battery Park in lower Manhattan along with about a million other people. It came as a great surprise when she moved from New Jersey to North Carolina to live with our sister Nancy. She was very adaptable and in no time at all she went from a Jersey Girl to a Southern Belle. So many fond and loving memories. Rest in Peace.
Millie was the best mother in law, anyone could hope for. She had a very amazing energy about her, one that I always admired. She was always happy, laughing, and positive about everything. I will never forget how she always made you feel good about yourself and how she was always dressed so crisp and sharp having such respect and class about everything. I learned A LOT from her and she doesnt even know it. We had many great family times together, and she was a wonderful Grandma to mine and Michael's kids, Jackie, Alex and Joshua. So I say, Mom, Millie and Grandma, Thank you for you. Rest in Peace, you are truly loved and will be missed. Lisa XO
