Michael “Mike” Ping passed away at the age of 82, in his home surrounded by his family on Monday, September 21, 2026. Born on June 19, 1944, he was the son of the late Lester and Virginia Ping.
Mike moved to Morganton in 1980 with FMC. After retirement, he went to work for Great Lakes Carbon and then went on to work for Foothills Correction. Mike was a very sweet and loving man. He loved traveling with his wife and being outdoors. Mike and Carol spent many summers at Hilton Head.
Mike is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carol Sue Etter Ping; children, Angela Baumgartner (Eric) and Beth Copeland (Gary); grandchildren, Kirstin Bryant (Justin), Katelyn Duckworth, Lauren Beck (Hayden), MacKenzie Baumgartner, Evan Baumgartner, Benjamin Baumgartner; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Kendall, Ryleigh, Blakely; siblings, Ethel Vieth, Richard Ping, Kenneth Ping; and a number of nieces, nephew, and extended family.
In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles and Keith Ping; sister, Jeannie Dorsett; grandparents, Michael and Ethel Davis.
A private celebration of Michael’s life will be held at a later date.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
