Mearl Louise Morrow Stine, 96, of Morganton, NC, passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2026.
Born in Burke County, NC on January 20, 1930, she was the daughter of the late William Morrow and Cora Lee Mabe Morrow.
Mearl was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church, especially in the nursery, until her health prevented her from continuing. She enjoyed cleaning and reading newspapers and books. Mrs. Stine attended NCSD, was fluent in sign language, and enjoyed being able to communicate with the deaf community.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Danny Stine (Jessica); daughters, Linda Barnes (David) and Patsy Franklin (Eddie); five grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, DJ Stine; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In addition to her parents, Mearl was preceded in death by her husband, Berlin Andrew Stine; granddaughter, Julie Bruen; and all her siblings.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Sunday, August 23, 2026 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor James Cain Jr. and Rev. Phillip King officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to Friendship Baptist Church.

To Mearl’s Family I had the privilege to deliver meals to Mrs. Stein for many years. Your father was still living at the time when I began visiting them. Your mom was always so kind, her home was so tidy, and we shared prayer when she had a specific concern. She always wanted to share cards that she received and loved her family so much! She will be missed!
I work at the hospital and loved Mearl, she was a gem. Our laboratory has never been as clean since she left. She was such a blessing to all of us. Such fond memories. Rest in peace sweet lady.
Sweet Merle worked in house keeping at Grace Hospital and I worked in a different dept. but I got to see her often and talk with her. She always had a big smile on her face and such a sweet lady. Sending my deepest sympathy to the Family. Rachel Causby Morgan

Mearl, you were such a dear sister in law and I loved you very much; to my nieces and nephew, Linda, Danny & Patsy I offer my deepest sympathy in the loss of your Mom and lift prayers for each of you.
Merle was the last of the neighborhood moms. We all grew up in the neighborhood around Table Rock Shop. Her kids and I were all just starting school and we're friends until we graduated. She was always nice to the neighborhood kids.
