Maynard Lindsey Chester, 77, of NC 18/US 64, Morganton, NC died Thursday, February 14, 2008 at the VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC following an extended period of declining health. He was born Feb. 2, 1931 in Burke County, NC, and was a son of the late Lindsey L. Chester and Essie Mae Lingle Chester. Maynard was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.He is survived by his wife, Velma Marie Cooke Chester of the home; a son, Kirk Chester and wife, Trudy, and a daughter, Linda Chester, all of Morganton; grandchildren, Chris Chester and Vanessa Gregg and husband, Jerry; great grandchildren, Shawna and Austin Gregg; brothers, Ronald, Howard, and Albert Chester; and sisters, Faye Witcher, Sue Fruitaker, and Lucille Isaac.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Roy, Carl, and Billy Gene Chester; and sisters, Ruth Curtis, Virginia Williams, Bertha Price, and Florence Penley.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, February 16, 2008 at Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. Brady Adkins and Rev. Clarence Correll officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park with military graveside rites conducted by the Valdese American Legion Post #234. The family will receive friends Saturday from 2 until 3 pm at the church.Memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.
