Mattie Ophelia Fortune, 88, of Morganton, NC passed away Monday, October 12, 2015 at Grace Ridge Retirement Community.  She was born in Forest City, NC on July 12, 1927 to the late Taft and Pearl Steadman Black.

Ophelia was a faithful member of Mount Home Baptist Church.  She sang in the choir for 47 years, served as a Sunday school teacher, and was a member of numerous committees for many years.  She dearly loved the Lord and her church.

Mrs. Fortune retired from Broughton Hospital as Assistant Reimbursement Officer after 43 years and 5 months of service.  She will be remembered and greatly missed for her warm, compassionate heart.  She was loved by all.

Ophelia is survived by her son, Kenneth Wayne Fortune and his wife, Wanda, of Montello, FL; a step-daughter, Marcella Civa of Somerdale, NJ; grandchildren, Kent Fortune of Monticello, Kendra Walker and her husband, Jason, of Crawfordville, FL, and Kelli Fillyall and her husband, Mike, of Monticello; a step-grandson, Joey Civa of Somerdale, NJ; great-grandchildren, Cody Walker, Jaret Kinsey, Kristen Walker, Kaylee Walker, Jadyn Kinsey, Tori Fortune, and Cody Walker; sisters, Catherine McDaniels of Morganton, Edna Weller and her husband, Jim, of Morganton, and Dorothy McGalliard and husband, Don, of Newton, NC; sisters-in-law, Christine Black of Kernersville, NC and Elizabeth Horton and her husband, Alton, of Morganton; and a brother-in-law, William Fortune and his wife, Lena, of Morganton.

In addition to her parents, Ophelia was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Neal Duval Fortune, Sr.; a son, Neal Fortune, Jr.; an infant son, and a brother, James M. Black.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until 12 p.m., Saturday, October 17, 2015 at Mt. Home Baptist Church.  The funeral will be held at 12 p.m. in the church sanctuary with the Rev. Jerry Gamble officiating.  Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park.
