Mary Mabel Stroupe Stamey, 89, of Morganton, NC died Thursday, July 30, 2015.  Born in Burke County, NC on October 10, 1925, she was the daughter of the late W.G. “Red” Stroupe and Matilda Cope Stroupe.  Mabel was a life-long dedicated member of Zion Baptist Church and served in a variety of roles within the church.  She touched the lives of many children whom she cared for during her many years as a nursery worker for the church.

Mrs. Stamey retired from the Food and Nutrition Services of Burke County Public Schools after 29 years.  She is fondly remembered by the students at Oak Hill School for her famous peanut butter cookies.

Mabel is survived by her sons, Jerry Stamey and Earl Stamey and his wife, Reba, all of Morganton; grandchildren, Shanda Stamey Woody and her husband, Eric, of Morganton and Alea Taylor of Hickory; great-grandchildren, Aaron Puett, Lindsay Puett, Christian Stamey, and Jakob Taylor; step-great-grandchildren, Matthew and Spencer Lambert; sisters, Elizabeth “Lib” Whisnant of Tennessee, Virginia Vance of Myrtle Beach, SC, Amy Kincaid of Morganton, Edith Barrier of Salisbury, NC; and several special nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 4:30 p.m., Saturday, August 1, 2015 at Zion Baptist Church.  The funeral will be held in the church at 4:30 p.m. with Rev. Keith Rose officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
