Mary Ida Slaght, 91 of Morganton, NC passed away Sunday, May 7, 2023. Born on October 21, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Nathan and Pauline Stevens.

Mary was an active member of St. Mary’s & St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. She won 2 governor awards for volunteering art BFFA, Hospice, and Good Samaritans Clinic. Mary loved to sew, bake, and cook. She also loved her family dearly.

Mary is survived by her son, George Steven Slaght (Carol); daughter, Elizabeth Susan Slaght (Mack Kale); grandchildren, Marilyn Guitheau (Kevin), Stephanie Fisher; great-grandchildren, Zoie Fisher, Dawson Fisher; great great-grandchildren, John, Caroline, Lilly, Rosie; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her husband, George Phillip Slaght; granddaughter Jessica Fisher; sister, Kathleen Schroeder.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2pm, Saturday, June 24, 2023 at St. Mary’s & St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Logan Lovelace officiating. The family will greet friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be made to St. Mary’s & St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
