Mary Evelyn "Ebbie" Poteat, 71, of Edgewood Avenue in Morganton died Thursday, October 16, 2008 at Grace Hospital following a period of declining health. She was born February 14, 1937 in Rutherford County, and was a daughter of Ruth Elizabeth Pursley Campbell of Morganton and the late James Andrew Campbell. Mary was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Marion, NC, and had also attended Laurel Haven Baptist Church in Morganton. She loved to bake cakes and was the "best cake baker" in Morganton. In 2006, Mary was named Foster Grandparent of the Year at J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center.She is survived by her children, Mike Cook of Morganton, Patricia Steffey and husband, Arnold, of Virginia and Richard McCall of Maiden, NC; step-daughter, Joann Smith and her children, Eric and Ricky Smith, all of Chesney, SC; granddaughter, Linda Evans of VA; a great-granddaughter, Morgan Evans of VA; a special grandniece, Katie Benfield; brothers, Wayne Campbell and wife, Frances, Bruce Campbell, Bob Campbell and wife, Patsy, Tom Campbell and wife, Margaret, Ernest Campbell and wife, Alice, and Leon Campbell and wife, Renee, all of Morganton; sisters, Ethel Runion, Brenda Arnette, and Jane Lawing and husband, Ed, all of Morganton; and a number of nieces and nephews.In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Winfred Poteat.Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, October 18, 2008 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Ed Lawing officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Marion, NC. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
