Mary Eliza Walton Hewat passed away on 05-01-2019.  Mary was a vibrant, loving person who was born on June 23, 1932 to the late C.V. “Bullet” and Doris Helen Delilah Franklin Walton.  Mary was a lifetime resident of Morganton, except for the few years she spent in college at UNC Greensboro and UNC Chapel Hill.  Mary met Bob while teaching at Drexel School and they were married on Dec, 23 1961. The Hewats had two boys; John Hewat of Morganton and Bill Hewat (Angie) of Goshen, Arkansas; four grandchildren, Bailey, Will, Emma and Gracie; and one great grandchild, Raylee.

Mary made a multitude of friends while living her active life.  She was a lifelong teacher and served as a role model for her students.  She had a strong work ethic and actively taught GED courses at WPCC until the day she had a stroke.  She was a servant to the community and volunteered her time with Habitat for Humanity and the Outreach Center, among others.  Mary grew up in the First Presbyterian Church in Morganton, where she was an Elder and devoted participant in its work and ministry.

Mary had a passion for life and enjoyed many activities.  She could be seen most mornings walking her dog, Tink, in “town”.  She was a voracious reader and always had a good book, or two, going.  But most of all, Mary was a people person.  She genuinely cared for the people around her.  She was proud of her students and friends, but she was especially proud of her family.  Her memories will leave a lasting legacy for those she cared for.

The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 5, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church in Morganton.  The family will greet friends following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church and Burke Hospice and Palliative Care.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
