Mary Anna Robinson, 92, of Abernathy Laurels, Newton, NC and formerly of Hwy. 150, Sherrills Ford, NC, died Friday, November 12, 2010 at Hospice of Catawba County Palliative Care Center, Newton following a brief period of declining health. Born in Catawba County, NC on October 15, 1918, she was a daughter of the late John Franklin Robinson and Nona Beatty Robinson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers, Harold M. Robinson, Sr. and his wife, Ruby Helms Robinson Tysor and Richard W. Robinson and his wives, Ruth Klee and Julia Spurlin. With the exception of two years spent in Baltimore, MD during World War II, Mary Anna, who was affectionately known as Aunt Polly, lived her entire life on the Robinson home place in Sherrills Ford, near Lake Norman. She was a descendant of colonial pioneer settlers that included Robinsons, Sherrills, Perkins, and Simpsons, who came into present day Catawba County from Virginia. Polly dedicated her life to her family, church, and community, being widely known for her pound cakes, chicken pie, and jelly made from her scuppernong grape vines. She was a lifelong member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Sherrills Ford where she served as church secretary and treasurer, was a member of the church choir, was a member of Women’s Circle #1, and was a member of the Senior Citizen’s group. She loved her family, traveling, singing in her church choir, and welcoming friends as well as family to come visit at her home and have a piece of red velvet cake and sweet tea.Surviving to cherish her memory are her nephew, Harold M. Robinson, Jr. and wife, Terri, of Morganton; grandnieces, Jennifer E. Robinson and Andrea R. Kells and husband, Rich; great-grand niece, Naomi Grace Kells, all of Durham, NC; and her cousin, Sue Robinson Christenbury, of Sherrills Ford.The memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 14, 2010, at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, Sherrills Ford with Rev. Joseph M Westfall officiating. The burial was Saturday at the church cemetery with Rev. Grady Barringer officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or Cemetery Fund, 4136 Mt. Pleasant Rd., Sherrills Ford, NC 28673 or to the Palliative Care Center & Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Rd., Newton, NC 28658. Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
