Mary Alice Brittain Carswell

Mary Alice Brittain Carswell, 97, of the Salem Community, left this earth and passed on into eternity on Saturday, February 9, 2019. Mary retired from J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center (formerly Western Carolina Center). She had many gifts but especially loved crafting. She was a member of Morganton Seventh Day Adventist Church.

She has joined her husband, Gaston Eugene Carswell; her mother, Lillian Morrison Branch Brittain; her father, Tilghman McDowell Brittain; daughter, Judy Sharon Carswell; son, Charles McDowell Browning; sisters, Mildred Etta McHenry, Hazel Janette Carswell, Camilla Jean Bracket and Ruth Irene Brittain, who died at childbirth: and step-granddaughter, Patricia Gail Butler.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Jonnie Elaine Peeler and son-in-law, Kenneth Earl Peeler; grandchildren, Danny Shawn Duckworth and wife, Tira, and Darren Scott Duckworth and wife, Janie; great-grandchildren, Clint and Shawna Duckworth, Joshua Duckworth and wife, Tabby, Jennifer, Joseph and Jillian Duckworth; step-grandchildren, Kenny Peeler and Steven Peeler; step son-in-law, Leonard Butler; great-granddaughter, Kena Rae Goodfellow; and sister, Lillian “Patsy” Walker.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at Sossoman Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 3:30pm at the Morganton Seventh Day Adventist Church Cemetery with Rev. Steve Bietz officiating.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
