Martha Sue Garrison Barbee

Martha Sue Garrison Barbee peacefully passed away with family by her side on August 24, 2026.

Born in Burke County, NC on April 7, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Roy Reid Garrison and Dorothy Christina Ross Garrison.

She married Dillon Rayvon Barbee in 1956 and together they raised their family in Charlotte NC. While in Charlotte she was an active member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School and helping to lead the Senior Citizens program.

In 2006, Martha returned to Burke County to be near her extended family. She quickly busied herself with visiting and tending to family and later became a faithful member of Burkemont Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School until 2020.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Teresa Haverly (Jim) of Marietta GA; son, Carlton Barbee of Morganton NC; granddaughters, Susan Baxter of Marietta GA and Chrissy Sears (Sean) of Seattle WA; grandsons, James (Jimmy) Haverly of Atlanta GA and Hunter Barbee of Madison WI; great-grandson, Dylan Baxter of Marietta GA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Dillon R Barbee; her sisters, RosaLee Garrison Dockery and Ruby Garrison James; and brother, Thurman “Buster” Garrison.

The family will receive friends from 1pm until 2pm, Friday, September 4, 2026 at Sossoman Funeral Home. A funeral will follow in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home at 2pm, with her nephew, Darrell James officiating. Burial will follow at Salem Methodist Church Cemetery.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
