Committal
Martha “Marty” Irvin Yount, 85, went home peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. Marty was born on June 9, 1940 in Burke County to the late Samuel “Pete” J. Irvin and Shirley Moses Irvin.
Marty was a devoted lifelong member of North Morganton United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, was a former United Methodist Youth Leader, belonged to the Coffee Club where she enjoyed spending time with the women of the church and attended the weekly Prayer Group. She worked for years in the textile industry often taking summers off to camp with her family. She enjoyed cooking, taking trips with her best friend, Edwina, loved country music, especially Conway Twitty, and watching old western movies and shows. In later years she enjoyed going jeeping with her boys.
Marty is survived by her sons; Robert Irvin and husband Frankie Romano of Conover, NC, Brett Yount and wife Taffi of Morganton, Barry Yount and wife Patricia of Denver; grandchildren, Nikki Carter and husband Chad, Jamie Yount and wife Mackenzie, Kendall Yount and partner Kaci Youschak, Zach Yount and girlfriend Mariya Avery, Kristie Yutzy and husband Glenn; thirteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Anne Irvin and wife Annie Barufaldi of Jacksonville, FL; sisters-in-law Kay Irvin and Patricia Martin; numerous nieces and nephews; lifelong best friend Edwina Clontz; and caretaker Rachael Visconti.
In addition to her parents, Marty is preceded in death by her husband, Bob Yount; son, Brian Yount; granddaughter, Krystal Johnson; and brother, Samuel “Sammy” Irvin.
Receiving of family and friends for Marty will be held at North Morganton United Methodist Church from 2pm to 3pm on Saturday, January 17, 2026. A funeral will follow in the sanctuary at 3pm with the Rev. David Rorie officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to North Morganton United Methodist Church Choir and Amorem Hospice of Valdese.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Family my pleasure to know and serve Ms Marty as the hands and feet of Jesus. What a precious soul. So grateful to God our paths crossed. First I met her best friend, then I met her then I met her best friend’s granddaughter. Thanking you again family for allowing me to serve. I was writing a letter to her and was looking for her address and I see the obituary. Love hugs prayers family. She was a dear precious soul and stole my heart from day 1. The short time I knew her less than 9 months we connected. Know I am praying for you all dear family and friends. What a legacy what a testimony she preached her on funeral the way she lived her life. A beautiful soul inside and out. God bless you all family.

I'm so sorry to hear about Marty's passing. Please tell the rest of your family I'm sending my thoughts and prayers to you and them. I lost my Irvin contact that you set up and don't know how to get it back. Can you help me get it back. I love all of you.
As a friend, I met Marty only a few years ago. She welcomed me and my husband Gene to North Morganton and then me in the coffee club. She was an amazing wonderful women and friend. Everyone loved her. She will be missed. So sorry to the family.....you had an amazing mother and grandmother.

Hey family! Sorry for your loss. Marty is loved and has passed on to her greater reward. I like think she’s in heaven now with our relatives(Pete, Shirley, her husband, my mom -Pam, my grandmother-Yvonne, my grandpa -Charles …) who have passed away before. My mom always spoke of the fun times with her cousins. She really loved Pete & Shirley too. I hope you take comfort in your memories and love. Hugs & condolences
