Margaret T. Ingram, 87, of Morganton, NC died December 25, 2018, with her daughter at her side. Born in Cleveland County, NC on January 1, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Blaine Toney and Villa Toney.

Margaret was the new year baby for Cleveland county in 1931. As one of the oldest of her 11 brothers and sisters, she helped with mothering duties for her younger siblings, some of whom thought of her as their “other mother”. In school she excelled and was valedictorian of her Lawndale high school graduating class of 1949. Soon after graduation she moved to Morganton, where she began a very successful career at Broughton Hospital, and retired after 42 years of service. After she retired, she spent many weeks each year on piers at Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, and later at the Surf City Pier near Wilmington. Her fishing successes included a state record flounder for which she received two beautiful trophies.

Margaret regularly attended St. Mary’s Episcopal Church for many years and loved her church community. She loved people, and her eyes lit up anytime she saw a baby or young child. She had an intense curiosity about anything and everything and sought to increase her knowledge at every opportunity. She was a loving and devoted mother, a very kind and gentle spirit, and was first in line to help anyone in need.

Margaret is survived by her daughter, Kristin Ingram of Houston, TX; a sister, Jean Jones of Shelby, NC; brother, J.B. Toney of Davidson, MD; a sister, Gay Miller, of Atlanta, GA; and a sister, Nona Barrier, of Shelby, NC.

Margaret was preceded in death by a daughter, Shelley Rose.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, December 29, 2018 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Jim Dahlin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church of Morganton.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
