Margaret Cuthbertson Raney, 84, of Morganton died Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at Grace Ridge Retirement Community in Morganton. Born in Burke County, NC on February 1, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Beulah Cuthbertson. Growing up, her family included three sisters, Edna Cuthbertson Culver, Nell Cuthbertson Rhyne, and Shirley Cuthbertson Prince.Margaret was a member of the Board of Deacons at Valdese First Baptist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir for many years. She was a dedicated member who lovingly served her church. She retired from the Waldensian Bakeries, Inc. and spent her leisure time in her flower gardens. Margaret was well known for baking delicious cakes and contributed many of her favorite recipes to the church cookbook. She partnered with her best friend, Bonnie Wilson, wife of Charlie Wilson, to lead a group of women known as Young Women’s Association (YWA). She has been an inspiration to many people. Margaret was known as a fun-loving woman who laughed often and yodeled with pride.Margaret is survived by her daughters, Linda R. Rostan and her husband, James H. Rostan of Valdese, and Susan E. Bley of Wilkesboro, NC; grandchildren, Kimberly Rostan and her husband, Matthew Johnston, of Spartanburg, SC, David Rostan and his wife, Stephanie Chan, of New York, NY, Hilary Bradley and her husband, Ryan Bradley of Wilmington, NC, and Alison Williams of Greensboro, NC; and great-grandchildren, Gianni Rostan Johnston, Charlotte Rostan, Avery Rostan, and Cora Bradley.In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Conley Raney.A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, December 13, 2012 at the Grace Ridge Mezzanine with The Rev. Noel Schoonmaker and The Rev. Timothy Horldt officiating. The family will receive friends in Table Rock Room at Grace Ridge following the service. A private family graveside service will be held at Burke Memorial Park.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Valdese First Baptist Church, 500 Faet Street, NW, Valdese, NC 28690 or to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690.Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with arrangements.
