Manly Hamilton "Hamp" Whisnant, 85, of Lenoir St., Morganton died Sunday, March 21, 2010 at his home. Born January 12, 1925 in Burke County, NC, he was a son of the late William James Whisnant and Bertha Mae Harris Whisnant. He was a retired engineer with the U.S. Coast Guard and served in the U.S. Navy. He loved to walk and garden.Mr. Whisnant is survived by daughters, Phyllis Smith and husband, Jay, and Karen Butler, and husband, Glenn all of Morganton; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; brothers, Paul Whisnant, and Melvin Whisnant; and sisters, Dorothy Moose, Betty Abee, Alice Shull, and Sarah Bowman.In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sons, Garry Whisnant and Christopher Whisnant; and brothers, John, Dan, Bill, and Bobby Whisnant.A celebration of Hamp’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at Calvary Assembly of God with Rev. Mike Whisnant officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military graveside honors provided by U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the service. At other times the family will be at Mr. Whisnant’s home. Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
