Malcolm Hicks, 81, of Morganton, NC passed away on Saturday, December 4, 2010 while surrounded by his family. Born in Surry County, NC on October 16, 1929, he was the son of the late James Arthur Hicks and Laura Victoria Mooney Hicks. Malcolm was a member of Asheville Street Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a reserve fireman for Morganton. He dearly loved officiating high school football games, which he did for 30 years. Malcolm retired from Great Lakes Carbon with 37 years of service.He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Irene Marshall Hicks of the home; children, Eddie Hicks and wife, Pam, Ron Hicks and wife, Tracey, and Tracey Hicks, all of Morganton; grandchildren, Rance Hicks, Adrian Rickert, Alan Hicks, Lara Hicks, and Charley Hicks; and a number of nephews and nieces.In addition to his parents, Malcolm was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 6, 2010 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Reverends Douglas Goforth and Ron Cooper officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690.
