Madeline Mary Frosch, 70, of Charlotte, NC passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2026 following a challenging and lengthy journey through heart failure. Madeline made a significant impact on everyone she met and her lasting legacy is one of love and friendship.

She was a native Charlottean born on September 12, 1955 to German immigrants, the late Richard Fredrick and Magda Rost Frosch.

Madeline grew up in Charlotte where she attended Charlotte Catholic High School where she excelled in basketball and academics. Following graduation, she attended UNCC, then transferred to Appalachian State University where she earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and played basketball from 1976-78 and coached from 1978-80. As a player she set multiple records, but more importantly she established many relationships that have lasted throughout the years.

Madeline worked for 36 years at Charlotte Country Day School where she was the Lower School Physical Education Program Coordinator and a physical education teacher of junior kindergarten through fourth grade students. During this time she developed the daily curriculum “designed to “get kids fit” by teaching basic movement skills, providing vigorous activity, and giving students an understanding of the value of lifelong fitness. The primary emphasis was on fun and fitness rather than competition.” While at CCDS, Madeline was the varsity girls’ basketball coach for a number of years during which time they earned 2 state championships. Many of her students maintained contact with her as they grew up and sent their children to CCDS to participate in the program.

Madeline is survived by her life partner of 44 years and wife of 10 years, Paulette Griffin, sisters-in-law Beverly Griffin, Judy Willis, and Janet Griffin; nephew Chase Griffin (Devan); niece Alexandra Cunnngham (Brett); great-nephews, Jackson Griffin, Crew and Cash Cunningham; great nieces Emma and Salem Griffin. She is also survived by four of her chosen sisters who were lifetime friends from her youth until her life’s journey ended, Ginger Gaffney Schexnayder, Marian Federal Phillips, Kathy Redmond Arthur, and Monica Ryck Johnson. Few people maintain relationships with friends of their youth over a lifetime.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Sam Griffin, and her fifth chosen sister, Mary Pat Zeman Cooper.

A celebration of Madeline’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, May 4, 2026 at St. Matthews Chapel at 11525 Elm Lane, Charlotte, NC 28277 with Fr. Dennis Kuhn officiating.
