Louise Brittain Veit, 92, of Moosehaven, Orange Park, FL and a former Morganton resident, died Friday, February 19, 2010 at Moosehaven Life Care Center following several years of declining health. Born in Catawba County, NC on April 1, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Wade H. and Hettie Baker Brittain. Louise’s mother died when Louise was a small child, so she was raised by her uncle and aunt, Walter E. and Mary J. Wilson. She was a graduate of Morganton High School, Rutherford College, and Asheville Business College. For many years she was employed as a secretary in the main office of Drexel Furniture Company. She also later worked at Morganton Tire Store and Nite Furniture Company. In the 1980’s she was manager of the Madd Paperback Book Exchange. Since 1953, and while a Morganton resident, Louise was an active member and officer of the Morganton Moose Lodge and the Women of the Moose. She was a former member and past Worthy Matron of the Mimosa Chapter of the Eastern Star. She was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church and was currently a member of Mountain Grove United Methodist Church in Morganton. In 1989 she and her husband, the late Joe Veit moved to Moosehaven. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husbands, Wyman W. Stubbs, Samuel Ray Smith, and Joe Veit; brothers, Wilburn W. Brittain and Joseph M. Brittain; a sister, Ellie Brittain Conrad; step-sons, Bob J. Smith and Benny L. Smith.Louise is survived by her daughter, Patricia Stubbs Walker and her husband, Phillip of Marietta, GA; sons, William "Bill" Stubbs and his wife, Judy of Morganton and Samuel Ray Smith, Jr. and his wife, Annette of Morganton; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; step-children, Terry Veit of Morganton, Kenneth Veit of Calhoun, GA, and Melodie Bachelder of Morganton; and numerous step grandchildren and step great grandchildren..A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 5, 2010 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with the Rev. Neal Brantley officiating. The family will greet friends at the funeral home following the service. A committal service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Mountain Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery on Fish Hatchery Road.
