Lonnie Ray Cowan, Jr., 95, of Morganton was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, February 21, 2019.  Born in McDowell County, NC on November 15, 1923, he was the son of the late Lonnie Ray Cowan and Margaret “Nell” Corpening Cowan.  Lonnie was a member of the Deaf Mission at First Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and faithful member.  He worked at Morganton Furniture for 51 years and was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the WWE. Lonnie graduated from the North Carolina School for the Deaf.

Lonnie is survived by his daughter, Irene Cowan Seiler of Morganton; grandchildren, Michael Shell (Robin), Tonja Shell, and Mark Shell (Heather); 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

In addition to his parents, Lonnie was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Edwards Cowan; brother, Lynn Cowan; and sisters, Eleanor Mull, Margaret Hicks, and Bobbie Carpenter.

The memorial service will be held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at First Baptist Church Chapel.  The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Deaf Mission, P.O. Box 459, Morganton, NC 28680.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the services provided by Burke Hospice and Palliative Care.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
