Leroy Swink, 90, of Morganton one of America’s Heroes retired to his Heavenly Home, Saturday, July 28, 2012 at the Burke Palliative Care Center in Valdese. Born in Burke County, NC on July 18, 1922, he was the son of the late Henry Swink and Velvie Butler Hudson. Leroy was a veteran of WW II, serving in the US Army from 1942 to 1946. He was a member of Carswell Memorial Baptist Church and retired from Drexel-Heritage Furnishings after forty years.In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Thelma Swink; grandson, Gary Buff and son-in-law, Kenneth White.Leroy is survived by his wife, Jonsey Maranda Poteat Swink of the home; daughters, Marie Buff and husband, Woodrow of Morganton, Myrtle Cannon and husband, Joe of Connelly Springs, and Diane White of Valdese; a step-daughter, Revonda Tweed of Morganton; and step-sons, Rex Tweed and wife, Ellen Poteet of Morganton and Fred Tweed and wife, Nora of Rockwood, Tennessee; half sister, Lou Ellen Martin of Connelly Springs; grandchildren, Steve Tweed, Travis Tweed, Curtis Tweed, Natasha Tweed, Samatha Hardsty, Gina Perez, Jonathan Buff, Donna LaFevers, Lisa Church, Tracy LaFevers, Steven White and Ashley White; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, July 30, 2012 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Lovelace officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park with military honors provided by the North Carolina National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.
