Lawrence Allen “Roy Lee” Gibson, 71, of Morganton, NC, formerly of Pineola, NC, won the victory over a life-time of juvenile diabetes and a shorter time with brain cancer.  He passed away on Friday, October 2, 2015.  He has run his race, fought the good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith.

II Timothy 4:7-8: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

Roy Lee lived his life unselfishly, worked hard all his life, and provided well for his family.  He wasn’t a man of many words, but he meant what he said and you knew it was the truth.

Mr. Gibson was born in Avery County, NC on February 11, 1944 and was the son of the late Lee Gibson and Syvilla Cole Gibson.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Vicki Gibson; a granddaughter, Heaven Lye; a brother, Jesse Olston Gibson; and a sister, Shirley Coulhoun.

Roy Lee is survived by his wife of 50 years, Geraldine Hurt Gibson of the home; a daughter, Pamela Williams of Drexel, NC; grandchildren, Heather Owens and her fiancé, David, Malachi Williams and his fiancée, Amber, and Brandy Lowman; great-grandchildren, Cameron Owens, Jacob Williams, and Cayden Wellborn; siblings, Tony Gibson and his wife, Freda, of Pineola, Faith Lacey and her husband, Bob, of Newland, and Johnny Gibson of Moyock, NC; and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m., Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at Muddy Creek Baptist Church (72 Muddy Creek Road, Nebo, NC).  The funeral will be held at the church at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Daniel McMahan officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  At other times the family will be at the residence.

Memorial contributions may be made to Muddy Creek Baptist Church, P.O. Box 397, Nebo, NC 28761.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

The family would like to express their appreciation to their special neighbor, Janice Hemphill, for all the help and support she has given to the family.
