Julius “Chris” Sylvester Rakestraw, 85, of Morganton, NC died Monday, November 28, 2016.  Chris was born June 7, 1931 in Cook County, Illinois to the late James Guy Rakestraw and Christine Bandola Rakestraw. 

Mr. Rakestraw was a veteran of the US Air Force serving during the Koren Conflict.  He was a member of Burke Community Bible Church, Catawba Valley Masonic Lodge # 217, and the Oasis Shriners.  Chris was the owner of Penny Patch Produce which he founded in 1983.  He was a giver and a helper who never met a stranger.

In addition to his parents, Chris was preceded in death by his brother, Jim Rakestraw.

Chris is survived by his wife, Jane Feimster Rakestraw, who he met while working at the Pentagon; children, Vicki Rakestraw Walker of Belmont, Rebecca Rakestraw Parker and husband, David of Hendersonville, David Rakestraw and wife, Teresa of Valdese, and Chris Rakestraw and girlfriend, Paula Simmons of Morganton.  He is also survived by grandchildren, Jessica, Lindsey, Tyler, Ginger, Ashley, and Brandon; great-grandsons, Huntley, Worth, Sibbes, and Fields; brother, Don Rakestraw and wife, Abby of Hickory; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 p.m., Sunday, December 4, 2016 at Sossoman Funeral Home.  The funeral will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the Colonel Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center with Pastor David Doster officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC  28690, Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL  33607, or Burke Community Bible Church, 114 S. Sterling Street, Morganton, NC  28655.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
