Joseph Anthony Schwind, Sr., 82, of Morganton, NC passed away Friday, April 2, 2021. He was born on December 19, 1938 to the late William Raymond Schwind and Florence Cecilia Loftus Schwind. He was born in Philadelphia, PA and the family later moved to Richmond, VA. He graduated from the St. Patrick’s Catholic High School in 1957.  Mr. Schwind met the love of his life in high school and during his college days married the late Marguerite “Maggie” Edwards Schwind. He attended the University of Richmond and started his career at Dixie Container Corporation in Richmond, VA. He began in customer service with the company, later production manager, sales, and lastly made company Vice-President. The President charged him with a company expansion in North Carolina. The location was decided to be in Burke County and the city seat of Morganton. Dixie Container Corporation was purchased by Packaging Corporation of America in 1992. He continued to be a marketing and sales representative for PCA until his retirement in 1999. Mr. Schwind was a veteran of the US Army.

Mr. Schwind loved and lived life well. He loved his wife, six children, and many siblings. Family meant everything to him.  He had many friends in life he deeply cherished. He enjoyed the outdoors. He had a special passion for hunting and fishing, especially fishing the Gulf Stream off the Outer Banks of NC. He loved his passion of flying as he was a private pilot for 26 years. Mr. Schwind was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church where he served on many boards and was also very involved with Burke Christian United Ministries.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, William Raymond Schwind and Charles Lawrence Peter “Pete” Schwind; sisters, Patricia Maria “Patsy” Friel and Florence Cecilia “Flossie” Curtiss.

He is survived by his children, Jeanette Marie Alexander (Bruce), Joseph Anthony Schwind, Jr. (Susan), Maureen “Mo” Schwind (Tracy Yancey), Kelly Ann Harton (Pat), Diane Elizabeth Cantrell (Todd), Theresa Marie Fox (Doug); grandchildren, Natalie Alexander Thompson, Katie Marie Alexander, Savannah Lindsay Harton, Joseph Anthony Schwind III, Chelsea Marie Schwind, Ronnie Douglas Fox, Jr., Stephanie Elizabeth Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Maggie-Claire Thompson, Macie Alexander, Bryan Kincaid, Eli Pitts, Mason Pitts; brother, Walter X. Schwind (Margaret “Peggy”); sisters, Mary Anne Schwind, Madeline “Lynn” Andrews (“Chick”); best friend of 50+ years, Dr. James “Jim” Thomas of Morganton, NC; special friend, Patricia Leary Floyd of Richmond, VA.

A graveside service will be at 12 noon on Tuesday, April 6, 2021 at Burke Memorial Park with Father Ken Whittington officiating. The family will greet friends following the service.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
