Joie Darnell Johnson, 72, of Morganton passed away at home while surrounded by her family on Sunday, July 22, 2018.  Born in Cleveland County, NC on July 31, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Joe Johnson and Nellie Viola Rogers Johnson.

Joie was an active, long-time member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church.  She loved her church and church family.  She enjoyed travelling, especially to anything involving her family.  She wasn’t involved in sports but was a great cheerleader.

A loving and devoted wife, mother, and nana, Joie is survived by her husband, James Johnson of the home; son, Bryan Johnson (Leslie) of Lenoir; the loves of her life, her grandchildren, Ethan and Graham Johnson; special sisters, Alma Davis (Don), Dallas Brittain, Nancy McClellan (Daniel), Debbie Johnson, and Mary Jo Rogers; special brothers, Tommy Johnson (Trish) and Ralph Johnson (Shelia); and a number of nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

In addition to her parents, Joie was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Rogers Powell; brother, Cecil Rogers; and infant son, Allen Brent Johnson.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at Sossoman Funeral Home.  The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 25 at St. Matthews United Methodist Church with the Rev. Elaine Hall officiating.  Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthews United Methodist Church, 201 Shady Rest Road, Morganton, NC 28655.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
