John Woodrow Norman, 92, of Hopewell Road, Morganton, NC died Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at the Burke Palliative Care Center in Valdese, NC. Born in Burke County, NC on August 19, 1917, he was the son of the late John E. Norman and Nancy Epley Norman. John served with the 393rd U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during WWII. He was a member and deacon of Hopewell Baptist Church and owned and operated John W. Norman Construction Company.John is survived by his wife, Clara Turner Norman of the home; a daughter, Carlette Norman McKinney of Morganton; sons, John Norman, Jr., Warren Norman and wife, Susan, and Larry Norman and wife, Linda, all of Morganton; grandchildren, , Stephanie Jarrett, Angela McKinney, Joshua Norman, Kelly Sizemore, and Megan Norman; great-grandchildren, Olivia and Sophia White, Elijah, Micah, and Jonah Norman, and Hunter and Jackson Sizemore; a sister, Lissie Dellinger of Rutherfordton, NC.In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a grandson, Jonathan S. Norman; a son-in-law, Wayne McKinney; brothers, Arthur and Grover Norman; and a sister, Cordie Epley.The funeral will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, August 14, 2010 at Hopewell Baptist Church with Reverends Homer Murdock, Johnny Ross, and Rob Castle officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service. At other times the family will be at the residence on Hopewell Road. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hopewell Baptist Church Building Fund, 1112 Hopewell Road, Morganton, NC 28655 or to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690.
