John Laxton Logan, Sr. 87, died Monday, June 21, 2010 following a brief illness. He was born in Rutherford County, N.C. on November 11, 1922 and was a son of the late Clifford M. and Minnie Beam Logan. Mr. Logan was a U. S. Air Force veteran of World War II where he served in India. He retired from Bernard Pontiac-Cadillac where he was manager of the parts department for 35 years. As a life-long member of Calvary Baptist Church, John was a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and served as outreach coordinator for several years. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, and the company of children.He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Betty Yelton Logan; his son, John L. Logan, Jr. and his wife, Jeongok, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; his daughter, Cynthia L. Logan, of Morganton; and several nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by brothers, Frank D. and Clifford Logan and by sisters, Sarah B. Logan and Nancy L. Edwards.The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 26, 2010 at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Friday at Sossoman Funeral Home where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes before the funeral hour. At other times, the family will be at the home.In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 29690 or to Calvary Baptist Church, 407 S. Green St., Morganton, NC 28655.
