John Alvin Holbrook, Sr., 78, of Morganton, NC died Wednesday, March 13, 2013. Born on November 4, 1934, he was the youngest of eight children born to the late Arlie Johnson and Mary Luzetta Cheek Holbrook. With his death, the family circle is complete in heaven. John was a member of the First Baptist Church in Glen Alpine and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force.John is survived by his wife, Dora "Betty" Holbrook of the home; a son, John A. Holbrook, Jr. and his wife, Debra, of Morganton; a daughter, Kimberly Holbrook Mullarney and her husband, Mike, of Winter Park, FL; grandchildren, Daniel Tubito, Mike John Mullarney, Leslie Holbrook, Ryan Mullarney and his wife, Ann Marie, and John A. "Trey" Holbrook, III and his wife, Shelby; great-grandchildren, Mikayla Holbrook, Mackenzi Holbrook, John A. "Finley" Holbrook, IV, Aubrey Mullarney, and Abigal Mullarney; and many loved nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brothers, Cecil, Harvey, Glenn, and Paul Holbrook; and sisters, Mary Harrold, Hazel Harrold, and Edna Cranor.The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 16, 2013 at First Baptist Church in Glen Alpine with the Rev. Michael Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard and the Caldwell Veterans Honor Guard and the escort provided by the Patriot Guard Riders. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center where the body will remain until placed in the church thirty minutes prior to the funeral hour. At other times the family will be at the home on Bethel Street.Memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690.
