Joe "Tommy" Causby, Sr., 94, of Advance, NC, formerly of Morganton, NC, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013. Born in Burke County, NC on November 24, 1918, he was the son of the late William Riley Causby and Julia Catherine Lowdermilk Causby. Tommy was a U.S. Marine veteran of WWII. He was a former member of Burkemont Baptist Church and was currently attending Forsyth Park Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC. He had been active in several Lions Clubs and other Civitan clubs and was a former mayor of Kure Beach, NC. Tommy was always active in the churches he attended; he taught Sunday school, served as a deacon and trustee, and sang in the choir. He retired from American General Insurance Company after over 40 years of service, having worked in Morganton, NC, Tallahassee, FL, Salisbury, NC, and Winston-Salem, NC.Tommy is survived by his son, Joe Tommy Causby, Jr. and his wife, Sandra, of Niceville, FL; a daughter, Ann Causby Wood and her husband, Ed, of Clemmons, NC; a grandson, John Bates and his wife, Joan, and their children, Elizabeth and Sidney; step-granddaughters, Sue Rice and her husband, Bill, and Ellen Fox and her husband, Clark; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents, Tommy was preceded in death by his wife, Veredah Williams Causby; brothers, Ernest, Herndon, Preston, and Raymond Causby; and sisters, Viola Lanier, Elsie Tallent, Mary Summitt, Louise Avery, and Vassie Duckworth.The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 24, 2013 at Burkemont Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. David Mills and the Rev. Tom Southern officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the service.Memorial contributions may be made to Burkemont Baptist Church, 4668 Burkemont Road, Morganton, NC 28655 or to Forsyth Park Baptist Church, 1600 South Hawthorne Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.The family would like to thank the caregivers at Bermuda Village Health Care Center, Hospice of Davie County, and special caregiver, Lisa Roseborough, for their kind and compassionate care during this difficult time.
