Jimmy Wayne Freeman, Sr., 80, of Morganton, NC, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2025.

Born in Montgomery County, NC on September 11, 1944, he was the son of the late William Cecil Freeman and Edith Twitty Freeman.

Fishing was one of Jimmys favorite activities. He was a member of the Hunting and Fishing Club on Huffman Bridge and loved night fishing at "boys night out." Jimmy also enjoyed quail hunting, planting a garden, and taking his family on vacations to the mountains. He used to love going to the beach as well until he was stung by a jellyfish. When Jimmy Jr. began attending the North Carolina School for the Deaf, he moved his entire family to Morganton so they wouldnt be separated. Jimmy was never shy about showing his love for his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Jimmy Wayne Freeman, Jr., (Brenda); step-sons, Eugene Thomas (Kathy) and Charles Thomas (Patricia); step-daughters, Gloria Etters (Jim) and Ann Freeman; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; siblings, Peggy Lynthacum (Bill), Bobbie Jean Haywood, and Darrell Freeman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Thompson Freeman; daughter, Debbie Freeman Malachi; brother, Roger Freeman; and sister, Shirley Freeman Callicutt.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Thursday, May 8, 2025 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at noon in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Richard Lynthacum officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Jr, I am so sorry for your loss. I only have a handful of memories of you and your dad. And you might not even remember me. We were so very young, only maybe 4 or 5. But we learned to communicate very well with each other. I still cherish those few memories. It was such a turbulent time in my young life. What little time we had together brought me great joy. Mom has shared stories and filled in the blanks for me about your parents. And about how good a man your dad really was. I guess that's why he let mom and me move in for a while. It sure wasn't because he had a huge house. I didn't realize how small that house was until I saw it as adult. But such meaningful memories were made there. I will keep you in my prayers.
