Jim McDaniels, 82, of Morganton, NC, passed away Thursday, June 12, 2025.
Born in Waynesville, NC on November 11, 1942, he was the son of the late Susie Nadine Letner Orders.
Jim was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church and part of the backpack ministry. He was a loving husband and father, and he was a devoted Papaw. Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, and painting. He loved working with children and coached women/girls’ softball and basketball.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 60 years, Shirley Jean Buff McDaniels; daughter, Kelly Rhoney (Doug); grandchildren, Easton Rhoney and Bailey Stikeleather (Mason); brother, Gary Orders; sister, Marie Avery (Elmer); nephews, Jimmy Avery (Selena), Colt Herron (Amanda), Jonathan Buff, Sherman Buff (Michelle), and Kenneth Buff; and nieces, Kendra Edney, Gina Perez (Robert), and Doris Boone.
In addition to his mother, Jim was preceded in death by a brother, David McDaniels; sister, Gayle Brooks; nephews, Kyle Orders, Gary Buff, and Keith Buff; and granny, Mamie Banks.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 4:30 p.m., Monday, June 16, 2025 at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. The funeral will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the church with Rev. Keith Burkhart and Dr. Bradley Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Backpack Ministry at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1159, Morganton, NC 28680.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

There is no words to express how I feel about the loss of my dear friend Jim. He treated me like family. I remember when I would see him in Walmart we would hug and talk as we would leave we was sure to say I Love you. Even though we didn't see each other alot I am still will miss him. Shirley I Love you and I am so sorry for the loss of Jim.

Jim was a good man and a friend .. we worked together for many years Jim taught me how to flat belt sand ,form sand and use a side stroke .. we liked to tell each other fish tales . His were always bigger than mine ...the tales not the fish 🐟 🐠 .my prayers are with Shirley and the family
