Jerry Wayne Cunningham, 75, of Morganton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

Born on September 21, 1950, in Surry County, Jerry was the son of the late Margaret Willette Burroughs Hunter and Andrew Parks Hunter.

Jerry proudly served his country as a U.S. Army veteran during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he dedicated 27 years of his career to Broughton Hospital, where he was known for his hard work and commitment.

A member of Summit Church, Jerry will be remembered most for the joy he brought to others. Music was one of his greatest passions, and many remember him from the 1980s as a member of the bands Goldrush and Stetsons. Affectionately known as “Mr. Morganton,” Jerry had a deep love for his hometown. Through his popular Facebook page, If You Grew Up in Morganton, he connected thousands of people by sharing memories, photographs, and stories that celebrated the community he cherished.

Jerry also had a love for photography, capturing special moments and preserving memories for others.

Above all, Jerry treasured his family. He is survived by his son, Jason Cunningham (Susan); daughters, Anetra Carrico and Tara Cunningham; grandchildren, Levi Cunningham, (Chloe) Malachi Cunningham, Destiny Moses, (Amber) Dillian Moses (Brittney), and Dominik Cunningham; great-grandchildren, Kayden and Aaron Moses; sister, Rhonda Cunningham Woodell; and stepbrothers, Ronnie Hunter (Vivian) and Don Hunter. He also leaves behind many extended family members, friends, and neighbors who will miss his kind spirit, laughter, and love for Morganton.

The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. on Monday, July 6, 2026, at Sossoman Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 3 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park, where military honors will be provided by the North Carolina National Guard.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has shared their love, prayers, and support during this difficult time. Jerry’s legacy of service, music, friendship, and love for his community will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
