Jeffery Stephen States

Jeffery Stephen States, 50, of Morganton, NC, passed away Friday, February 20, 2026.

Born on June 10, 1975 in Joliet, IL, he was the son of the late Carl Franklin VanSycoc and Carolyn Ann Hanseman.

Jeff was a free spirit and always “going with the flow.” He loved Dragons and Fairies and enjoyed being out in nature. Jeff liked a wide variety of music that told stories. He was always ready for music and video games. His favorite color was purple and Terry Good was one of his favorite authors. He enjoyed spending time with family and his dear friends, especially David Parker and his wife, Lynn.

Jeff is married to Rosa States for almost 21 years; their anniversary is March 10. They lived together in Morganton and in Illinois, and he helped raise her three children: James Wise and his wife, Tabitha (and their children, Anubis and Clementine), Desiree Wise and her fiancé, Tyler (and their children, Sage and Ivan), and Danny Wise and his fiancée, Iva. Jeff is also survived by his siblings and half-siblings, Carl D States and wife, Rainie, Carla Hyatt and husband, Johnny, Mathias States, and Liz Mitchell, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.

In addition to his parents, Jeff was preceded in death by four half-siblings, Michael Williams, David Williams, Marilyn States, and Donnalyn Fannin.

At Jeff’s request, no services are planned at this time; his cremated remains will be taken to a family cemetery in Neoga, IL. A family gathering will be held at a later date.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
