Jean Neal Covington Childress, 93, of Morganton, NC passed away on Friday, November 3, 2017. The only child of Everett Prince Covington and Elizabeth Pitchford Covington, she was born in Fayetteville, N.C. on August 23, 1924. She was married to Vincent Davis Childress, Sr., of Morganton, N.C., in 1951, who preceded her in death.

Jean is survived by two sons, Vincent Davis Childress, Jr., and wife, Jane Cox Childress, of Asheville, NC and Everett Covington Childress and wife, Beth, of Jamestown, NC; and by five grandchildren, Caroline Latham Childress and Kendall Elizabeth Childress, both of Jamestown, and Diana Neal Childress, James Arrington Murray, and Herndon Thompson Murray, all of Asheville.

She received her education from the Laurinburg City Schools and the University of NC in Greensboro (known at that time as “Women’s College.”) 

Jean and her husband Vincent moved from High Point, NC to Morganton in 1971. Jean became an active member of Grace Episcopal Church, where she served as President of the Episcopal Church Women for one year and as Altar Guild Chairman for 20 years. Jean was also a member of four genealogical societies; Daughters of the American Revolution; the National Society of Colonial Dames of the XVII Century; the National Society of the Magna Charta Dames and Barons, and the Order of the Crown of Charlemagne.

Jean was family oriented and adored her parents, her husband, her sons, their wives and all of her grandchildren.

A service celebrating Jean’s life will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Morganton on November 13, 2017 at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in honor of Jean may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, 303 South King St., Morganton, NC 28655.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family.
