Jean Marie Ale, 94, of Morganton, NC, formerly of Annandale, VA, passed away Monday, May 15, 2023.Born in Washington, D.C. on May 5, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Charles M. Theodore and Marie Wood Theodore.

Jean was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fairfax, VA and prior to her retirement served as staff assistant to the US Army Chief of Staff. Mrs. Ale was known by family and friends alike as Nana. She is survived by her daughters, Kathy Deekens (Andy) and Carolyn Quetsch (Jim); son, Stephen Ale (Lenore); daughter-in-law, Cathy Ale; grandchildren, Anne Deekens, Logan Ale, Reagan Ale, Shelby Ale, Trey Ale, Emily Price (Taylor), Liz Ale, Thomas Ale, David Quetsch, Megan Quetsch, and Christy Quetsch; and great-granddaughter, Cora Price.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her son, John Richard Ale; grandchildren, Drew and Laura Deekens; brother, Charles Theodore; and former husband, John R. Ale.

Nana enjoyed trips to the Outer Banks, Lake James, and visiting with family. She was an avid reader, news junkie and bridge player. She also liked all sports on television, especially PGA golf. In later years she learned to use her smart phone, although frequently muttered “stupid phone” accompanied by the infamous Nana eye-roll.

The family would like to thank Dr. David Abernathy and his staff for their excellent care over the last several years as well as Dr. Jonathon Brisson for his excellent care during her recent hospitalization. The family also appreciates the superb care from the nursing staff and personnel at UNC Healthcare Blue Ridge and the staff of Amorem during her final days.

Graveside services for Jean will be held at Colombia Gardens Cemetery, Arlington Virginia, June 24th at 11:00 am.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Children’s Home Society of North Carolina, Amorem hospice, or the charity of one’s choice.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
