Janice Colene Coffey Caroway, 81, of Morganton passed away peacefully at her residence, Tuesday, October 12, 2021 after a period of declining health.  She was born in Franklin, NC on June 8, 1940 to the late Bruce and Colene Braswell Coffey of Collettsville, NC.  She was preceded in death by her sister, Nellie Jean Lindley.

Janice grew up in Collettsville and graduated from Collettsville School.  She attended Appalachian State Teachers College graduating in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science degree.  Upon graduating, Janice taught school in Arlington, Virginia for one year before moving to Morganton.  

Janice taught English for a number of years in the Burke County Public School system and finished her career as a librarian at Freedom High School. Janice was a gifted vocalist, pianist and organist.  She enjoyed reading, knitting and spending time with her family. She was a devoted Christian and member of First Baptist Church of Morganton.  

Janice was a kind, selfless and a forever faithful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bill Caroway; twin brother, Gerald Bruce Coffey (Pam); Children, Deborah McCurry (Jim), Angela Williams (Scott), Traci Riebel (Buddy); grandchildren, Andrew Lowdermilk (Eleanor), Patrick Lowdermilk, Jordan Williams, Matthew (Bailey), Connor Williams, Katie Riebel; great-grandchildren, Lenoir Lowdermilk.

A celebration of life service will be held at First Baptist Church of Morganton on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at 2:00pm. The receiving of friends will immediately follow in the fellowship hall. 

The Caroway family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to Catawba Valley Medical Services, Carolina Caring, and a loving group of caregivers that provided excellent care to Janice at her home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to FBC Morganton.
