Jane Sigmon Wolfgang, 85, of Morganton, NC died September 17, 2016. She was born on June 6, 1931 in Hickory, NC to the late Maggie W. and Russell E. Sigmon. She attended elementary and high schools in Troutman, NC from 1935 until 1948. During her senior year, she attended Central High School and graduated in 1949. She attended Mitchell College from 1949 until 1951 and graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College in 1953. A life-long member of the Lutheran Church, Jane then became the Christian Education Director of the First Lutheran Church in Albemarle, NC. In 1957, she entered the Lutheran Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Master’s Degree in Religion in 1958. Jane was one of the first two women to graduate from Southern Seminary. She then became the Assistant to the NC Synodial Bishop in the field of Christian Education in the Lutheran Synod of North Carolina. Jane was a leader and organizer of the catechetical and teacher training of all ages with many congregations throughout the state. After moving to Morganton, Jane became active in the Burke Literacy Council, teaching students disabled by dyslexia. She was also a charter member in the Burke United Christian Ministries Food Kitchen. She married Wilford W. Wolfgang in Burlington, NC on October 18, 1959.

Jane is survived by her husband, Will; daughter, Beth Walborn of Morganton; grandson, Andrew Turngren of Charlotte, NC; and sister, Peggy Sheppard of Charlotte.

Services for Jane will be held at a later date.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
