James Shufford Cagle, 75, of Morganton, NC, went to his heavenly home Sunday, May 18, 2025. Born in Harding County, KY on December 28, 1949, he was the son of the late James Curtis Cagle, Sr. and Edith Sarah Robinette Cagle. James was of the Baptist faith and graduated from Drexel High School in 1970. He then served as a staff sergeant of a recon platoon of the US Army during the Vietnam War. He also served in Korea and Germany. While in the Army he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, (CIB) Medal, Bronze Star Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, and Overseas Service Ribbon. James was an avid collector of coins, medals, and pins. He enjoyed fishing, playing guitar, and playing banjo. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Mary Lois Henson Cagle; daughter Melissa D. Stamey (Tony); granddaughter, Haley A. MacLachlan (Bill); sisters, Peggy Jean Deal, Vivian Lee Taylor (Steve), and Joyce Ann Wilson (Gary); and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his brother, James Curtis J.C. Cagle, Jr. A celebration of James life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 24, 2025 at Table Rock Seventh-day Adventist Church (3121 Adventist Circle, Morganton, NC). Military honors will be provided by the NC National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to Silver Creek Adventist School, 2195 Jamestown Road, Morganton, NC 28655-9101 (silvercreekschool.net/supporters) or to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (stjude.org/donate).
