James Phifer Luckadoo, 85, of Shady Rest Road, Morganton, NC died Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, NC. Born in Burke County, NC on March 15, 1925, he was the son of the late Jasper Lee Luckadoo and Viola Rose Causby Luckadoo. Phifer was a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church of which he was a charter member. He held numerous church positions including church treasurer for many years. A U.S. Army veteran of WWII, he was a retired employee of Carolina Shoe Company.Phifer is survived by his sons, Jimmie Luckadoo of Morganton and Carl Luckadoo and wife, Laura, of Hickory; grandchildren, Ashley Davis and husband, Lawrence, Traci Luckadoo, and David Lucadou; a great-granddaughter, Lela Davis; and a sister, Ruth Champion of Gastonia, NC.In addition to his parents, Phifer was preceded in death by his wife, Hilma Barrier Luckadoo, and a sister, Betty L. Dellinger.The funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at St. Matthews United Methodist Church with Reverends Alan Boliek and Terry Duckworth officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home where the body will remain until placed in the church thirty minutes prior to the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthews United Methodist Church, 201 Shady Rest Rd., Morganton, NC 28655 or to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
