James Norman Long, 83, of Morganton died Thursday, October 23, 2014 following period of declining health.  Born in Burke County, NC on March 13, 1931, he was the son of the late Oscar S. Long and Pearl Moretz Long.  Norman was a member of First Baptist Church where he was a member of the Huffman Sunday School Class.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, retired from the Burke County Tax Office, and was former President of the NC Property Mappers Association.  He was an avid gardener.

A deeply loving and devoted husband and father, Mr. Long is survived by his wife, Juanita W. Long of the home; children, Debra Miller and her husband, George, of Mt. Holly, NC, Michael Long and his wife, Alison, of Old Fort, NC, Richard Long and his wife, Sheila, of Morganton, and Karen Long-Moore and her husband, Terry, of Forest City, NC; grandchildren, Stephanie Martens and her husband, Stephen, of Greensboro, NC, Sarah Engle and her husband, Dustin, of Morganton, Christopher Miller and his wife, Kimberly, of Columbia, SC, Geoffrey Miller and his wife, Courtney, of Bozeman, MT, and Cameron Miller of Anniston, AL; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Franklin and her husband, Jink, of Morganton; and brothers, Charles Long and his wife, Tamara, of Monroe, NC and David Long and his wife, Sue, of Washington, D.C.

The memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, October 26, 2014 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Thomas A. Bland, Jr. officiating.  The family will receive friends in the church parlor from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
