With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved brother, James Michael “Mike” Whisnant, to Jesus on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.
Born in Burke County, NC on October 18, 1964, he was the son of the late James Robert Whisnant and Linda Elizabeth Lackey Whisnant.
Mike was a graduate of Freedom High School and worked in manufacturing for a number of years. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed Jeep rides in the mountains, and summer beach days. He also enjoyed taking outdoor photos and woodworking. Recently, he would be found enjoying life through caring for his lawn and beloved cats, as well as spending time with Candice and his family. Mike was a loving and protective brother to his sisters, and he was generous to his neighbors.
Those left to cherish his memory include his companion, Candice Peeler; sisters, Arlene Whisnant Freeman, Darlene Whisnant Crotts (Mike), Regina Whisnant Roper (Vince), and Brenda Whisnant (Harry Poovey); and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Friday, April 17, 2026 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Ryan Sebastian officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
