James McCombs III, 60, of Gingercake Acres, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 25, 2017. He was born on November 22, 1956 in Chapel Hill, NC, to J.H. McCombs, Jr. and Mary Louise Cornwell McCombs.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his daughters, Callie Rutledge McCombs and Julia Clemmons McCombs and their mother, Bobbie Clemmons McCombs; brother and sisters, Mary Lou McCombs Hudspeth of Charlotte, Thomas Huffman McCombs of Morganton, Julie McCombs Garner and husband, Chip of Acworth, GA; a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephew and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.
James was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Morganton. He graduated from The McCallie School and from Mars Hill College with a Bachelor’s degree. He owned and operated Laurel Country Store in Pineola for over 30 years. After he retired from his store, he worked construction locally with his dear friend, Travis Dale.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at Forest Hill Cemetery. The Celebration of Life will be at 12:00pm, Wednesday, at First United Methodist Church of Morganton with the Rev. Dr. John Fowler, Rev. Charlotte Brendel and Chaplain William Robertson officiating. The family will receive friends after the service in the fellowship hall. Memorial contributions can be made to First United Methodist Church, 200 King St., Morganton, NC 28655. Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
