James "Jimmy" Taylor, Jr., 66, of Drexel, NC died peacefully on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at his residence. Born in Mecklenburg County, NC on November 12, 1947, he was the son of the late James Ray Taylor, Sr. and Pearl Eve Crane Taylor. Jimmy served two tours in the Vietnam War as a member of the U.S. Army and was a prisoner of war. After the war he worked as a diesel mechanic at several area shops. He was a member of Steelcreek Masonic Lodge #737 AF&AM; of Charlotte.Jimmy is survived by his wife, Carol Cain Taylor of the home; a daughter, Melissa Carol Taylor of Drexel; grandchildren, Victoria Caroline Taylor and Richard Taylor Sommers, both of Drexel; and sisters, Freda Norwood of Gastonia, NC and Karen Haskett of Charlotte, NC.The funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, May 25, 2014 at Burkemont Baptist Church with Dr. David Mills and the Rev. Eddy Bunton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 43, P.O. Box 572, Morganton, NC 28680.Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
