James Herman Ervin, Sr., 77, of Morganton died Tuesday, April 10, 2018.  Born in Burke County NC on September 6, 1940, he was the son of the late William Ervin, Sr. and Lizzie Ervin.  In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by a son, James H. Ervin, Jr.; brothers, Millard Ervin, William “Billy” Ervin, Jr., John Ervin, and Carl Ervin; sisters, Katherine Davis and Annie Sue Max; and a daughter-in-law, Harriet Ervin.

James was a lifelong member of Shiloh AME Church and Mission AME Church.  At Shiloh, James served on the Steward Board and sang in the men’s choir.  He graduated from Olive Hill High School and retired from Drexel Heritage as a supervisor in 2005 after 35 years of employment.  He was also a retired fireman with the Lake James Community Fire Department.

Mr. Ervin is survived by his wife of 54 years, Evelyn Cuthbertson Ervin of the home; daughter, Fannie Laverne (Leslie) Davenport; sons, Robert and Jessie Ervin; grandchildren, Sean A. Ervin, Mary Ervin, Marius Harshaw, Isaiah Ervin, and Nicholas Davenport; 5 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; sisters, Sadie Mae Max, Sophie Jean Pearson, Margaret Pearson, Connie Caldwell, and Jeanette Norwood; and a brother, Harry Ervin.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Shiloh AME Church.  The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. in the church with the Rev. Dr. Wayne Johnson, Sr. officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
